December 30th

Thursday, December 15th, 7pm, The Cadillac Lounge, 1296 Queen West, Burning Boyz, Ike Cedar and the Daydrinkers and Clang play The Cadillac. Bring an unwrapped toy or buy a gift card at the door for children living at our local shelter.

Friday, December 16th, 5-9pm, Academy of the Impossible, 213 Wallace Ave.  Warm the Academy of the Impossible with the Parkdale Street Writers, find out what the Parkdale Street Writers are all about and how you can get involved!

Friday, December 16th, 6 pm, 1275 Queen West. Community 54 Store Launch – opening of Community 54’s Toronto location (fashion meets video arcade!) featuring a special in-store meet and greet with rapper Rich Hil.

Friday, December 16th, 10 pm, The Shop under Parts & Labour, 1566 Queen West.  5th Annual Parkdale Festivus! A dance party for a great cause with music provided by DJ Vaneska and raffle prizes donated by Parts & Labour, C2 Apparel, Crows Nest Barber Shop, The Pearl Harbour Gift Shop, MISFITSTUDIO, Jack Astor’s, Doublenaut, Bikes on Wheels and lots more. $10 at the door, with proceeds going to Interval House, a Toronto Shelter that provides emergency services for abused women and children.

Saturday, December 17th, 10 pm, The Shop under Parts & Labour, 1566 Quwwn West. The Parkdale Soul Revue with DJs Mark Pesci and Kristal Kent spinning sweet soul music by the likes of Stax, Volt, Hi, Chess, Motown and more. Special Christmas edition will include the best soul of the season plus the usual year-round classics! Free before 11:30 pm, $5 after.

Saturday, December 17th, 2pm. Masaryk-Cowan CRC, 220 Cowan Avenue Auditorium. Keys to the Studio concert.  Keys to the Studio is a collective of artists diagnosed with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Friday, December 9: The Mascot is hosting its third annual One Less Paper Cup exhibit this Friday at 1267 Queen W from 8 – 12.  A silent auction featuring cup designs by Lauren Pirie, Micheal Ford, Julia Hepburn and so many more exciting artists.  All money raised will go towards Grounds For Health an organization dedicated to the prevention, screening and treatment of cervical cancer in coffee growing communities of Central America and East Africa.  The BIA can personally guarantee that this is an amazing party with wonderful people.

Friday, December 9 – Sunday, December 11: Shopgirls has been gracing Parkdale with its presence for four glorious years, and to celebrate they are throwing a 4th anniversary weekend complete with a balloon pop!  Stop by 1342 Queen West any time from Friday to Sunday to participate in the balloon pop and you can win 10% – 50% off your entire purchase!

Saturday, December 10: Parkdale Jr. and Sr. Public Schools are holding a Holiday Fair at 78 Seaforth Avenue from 10am-1pm.  Sponsored by Buca and The Feather Factory, the fair will have crafts, baked goods, toys, a silent auction, raffle, facepainting, cookie decorating and holiday craft making.

Sunday, December 11: Are the holidays a difficult time for you?  The Parkdale Prana Room at 1273a Queen West is holding a workshop from 1-5 for those of us who find the holidays tough. Participants will share their experience of the holiday season and explore the obstacles that it presents through artwork, dialogue and forms of Gestalt psychology with trained psychotherapists. Thursday, December 1st

Made You Look is hosting their tenth anniversary party at their two locations on Queen W (by Elm Grove) from 5-10 pm.  Drinks, snacks, mind-reading and a bash for our beautiful local jewellers!  Made You Look Studio and Gallery 1338 Queen W (North Side) Made You Look Accessories 1273 Queen W (South Side).

The Mascot (1267 Queen W) presents the art opening for Dave Sheppard‘s “The Muse” from 7:30 until 11pm. In what Sheppard calls his “Muse Paintings”, he uses  the “spark of enlightenment” metaphor and incorporates light bulbs into the bodies of fish and places candles into the claws of crabs.  This is the Mascot’s last show of the year so don’t miss it!

Friday, December 2nd

Wrongbar presents their monthly installment of Big Primpin’ – hip hop and hot times for homos, their friends and admirers – on Friday from 10pm – 1am.  This BP is special because it is long time hostess Miss Margot’s retirement party.  You don’t want to miss her fabulous, final appearance.  1279 Queen W.

For the month of December, the Parkdale Public Library (1303 Queen W) will be hosting free Friday Movie Nights in the Parkdale Auditorium from 6-8pm.  Sit back, relax and enjoy a movie on the big screen for free!  For more info call 416.393.7686.

The Parkdale Community Development Group is holding its annual Holiday Edition of the Parkdale Bazaar from 11am to 5pm at the Mazaryk-Cowan Community Centre (220 Cowan Avenue – near Queen).  There will be local and indie craftspeople selling their wares, hot chocolate, raffles, and Christmas Carols! 

Sunday, December 4th

The TO Attiwapiskat Crisis Relief Effort is holding a donation drive on Sunday through Monday at Xpace Gallery (58 Ossington Ave – just a few blocks East of Parkdale).  Please bring warm clothing, blankets, non-perishable food items or toiletries between 11am and 7pm.  Go here to learn more about the Attawapiskat Crisis.

Monday, December 5th

If you are in grade 8 or 9, come to Mazaryk Cowan CRC at 220 Cowan Avenue for the food program Youth Corner, Growing the Future. From 4 to 6 pm participants will work on the Youth Garden signs for Hope Garden, as well as learning to make lasagna with salad and home made croutons in the kitchen!  For more information contact Robyn at robyn@greenestcity.ca.

Wednesday, December 7th

Mazaryk Cowan CRC (220 Cowan Ave) is also hosting a Youth Community Kitchen for youth 15 and up from 5-7:30pm. This cooking experience for older youth, will be held on the first and third Wednesday of each month.  No registration required, just drop by the community centre to check it out or contact Robyn at robyn@greenestcity.ca for more info.



Made You Look 10th Anniversary Party!

Break out the bubbly – Parkdale’s beloved Made You Look is turning 10!

Truly a Parkdale pioneer, the West Queen West shop has showcased their unique jewellery designs to the neighbourhood and has been an integral part of the community for a decade.  So it’s time to celebrate!

Made You Look is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary on Thursday, December 1st from 5 to 10 at both the Made You Look Accessories store (1273 Queen W) and Made You Look Jewellery Studio and Gallery (1338 Queen W).  They will celebrate with graffiti artist Qwest working on a brand new mural in the back alley during the party, tasty treats from the El Gastronomo Vagabundo food truck and the magical powers of Danny Proctor the Mind Reader!

My Roll Life: Grand Opening Party

Last week we posted about the exciting new rollerskating and bicycle culture boutique, My Roll Life, that’s just opened up in Parkdale! On Wednesday (November 30th) they are having their Grand Opening Party in the store (at 1714 Queen Street West) and it’s gonna be a hoot!

Join Gwen McDonald aka Goldie Lock’n’Load from 6:30 to 11:30 to celebrate her GRAND OPENING, with snacks provided by Cardinal Rule and drinks from Great Lakes Brewery.

According to gorollerderby.ca this shindig includes a disco ball, vintage video games, roller derby on the big screen, and photo-ops with a rollerskating zombie cow.  Get granted access to the inside scoop of the derby world from the West End Waywards Rollerskating Association and the Rollergettes.

Toronto Public Library – Parkdale Branch – Public Meeting

The Toronto Public Library Board will be hosting an evening of discussion related to the potential service cuts for Ward 14 residents.  This will be an opportunity for concerned residents to share comments to the Board.

The suggested service reductions that would affect residents of Ward 14 are:

  • Fewer titles and copies of books, audiobooks, DVDs and magazines available in library branches;
  • Reduced hours:
  1. Parkdale Public Library Branch: 13-hour reduction each week from 69 to 56 hours hours/week
  2. High Park Public Library Branch: 6-hour reduction each week from 62 to 56 hours/week

Toronto Safer Nightlife Forum

On Tuesday November 8, 2011 the Toronto Safer Nightlife Committee will be hosting the Safer Nightlife Forum.

This forum will explore safety issues in Toronto’s nightlife scene.  Both youth and bar/club operators are encouraged to take part in this discussion.  The 2011 panel discussion will be moderated by Jerry Levitan (lawyer, musician and academy award winner) and panelists include Yamina-Sara Chekroun (youth outreach operator/event promoter), Nav Sangha (venue operator), Mike Homewood (Homewood Security) and Samantha Wells (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health).
